A famous traditional Japanese sea shanty of Hokkaido region "Soran Bushi" arranged in upbeat rock style.
From the latter part of Edo era to the early Showa era, herring fishing was very popular along the Sea of Japan coastline of Hokkaido. The lead fisherman leads chants to encourage the fishermen during their work of dragging nets, pulling ropes and lofting luggage over their shoulders. The first 8 measures of the introduction is the shanty used while rowing the boat, and strong masculinity must be portrayed. "Soran Bushi" begins from measure 9 with a tempo and style change. The approximate tempo is MM 126-138 but perform with much energy and liveliness. The percussion parts of Hi-Hat Cymbal, Snare Drum, and Bass Drum can be performed on a drum set; a part is included. A taiko drum can be substituted for tenor drum in the middle section to produce a more authentic sound. Add extra percussion accessories to the "Tambourine etc." part such as shakers, jingle bells, or hand claps.
"Soran Bushi" has evolved into a variety of unique traditional sea shanties from region to region, reflecting and adjusting to regional cultures.
