This work was written for Chinzei Gakuin High School Wind Band, Nagasaki Prefecture, in December 1997 and performed at Ensemble Contest that year. The flutes' role could be compared to that of dancers or performers in ballet or drama, and the percussion would be stage art or lighting. By understanding this, balance and contrast between the two groups and the character development of both will be clearer. The work can be presented as a dance or drama with free and strong imagination. By instrument character, percussion tend to dominate. This could be improved by positioning of instruments on stage. I recommend muted snare drum. Since the formation of notes by the flutes is very similar, it is important that they as well as the full ensemble be unified, and that percussion match flute expression with an ear towards balance. "Set in the distance", indicated in the 1st flute's first measure, is to perform at a distance, for instance the stage wings or rear of the theatre. Not just the position, but tone and expression should portray a distant, removed effect. And "set ordinarily" means normal position. I hope you understand that this song can create sound images by the perspective of location as well as volume contrast.
