Program Notes:
Commissioned by the Tokai University Takanawadai Senior High School Wind Orchestra in 2022. "Pele, the Fire Bird" was inspired by the image of a single bird flying over a city destroyed by war, evoked by the music at [B]. The composition features the introductory main theme (horn) which is variously developed throughout the piece, including through inversion at [B] and rhythmic variation in the marimba at [E]. The theme appears in different parts and voice types throughout the composition, including as a melody at [O] and [R], and as a bass line at [J]. Performers are instructed to use differing articulations, such as staccato and legato, to vary the expression of the theme.

For cuts:
At the end of the score, an alternative introduction, abbreviated from the beginning to [B] is provided. You may use it when performing at contest. Also, during a contest performance, the Tokai University Takanawadai Senior High School Wind Orchestra cut the piece from [U] to the fourth bar of [W]. In that case, please play the saxophone's sixteenth notes in bar 182. For more cuts, please refer to other contest performances.
