Persepolis was a majestic city that symbolized the glory of the ancient Persian Empire, located in southern Iran. Today, its ruins lie in silence, while the wind whispers stories of its former grandeur. I was deeply inspired by the city's sense of magnificence and mystery, and composed this piece upon commission from Bravo Music, as a work dedicated to supporting small bands.
The piece opens with music that evokes a solemn and dignified royal procession. It then unfolds into sections featuring scales reminiscent of Middle Eastern music, combined with rhythmic passages that convey ethnic vibrancy and dynamic energy. The middle section transforms into a lyrical chorale, expressing sorrow for the lost city, and paints a dreamlike moment in which the past and present intertwine. In the latter half, the music builds to a fast-paced dance, culminating in a powerful climax.
The subtitle, Forgotten City Lost in the Desert, reflects my deep respect for ancient civilizations that continue to fascinate us across time, as well as my hope in the power of music to awaken the imagination.
