Printed set (Score & Parts)
The Shadow series of original clarinet ensemble works began with Ran-ei, and continued with Yoikage, Namikage, Benikage, and Reiei. This piece, Senei, marks the sixth installment in the series. The character "SEN KANJI (sen)" conveys meanings such as "flash," "momentary light," or "lightning." If we consider "sen" to represent a moment charged with energy, then its counterpart "ei" (shadow) can be seen as the piece's darker, more introspective aspect. At times, melancholy can be transformed into an evocative atmosphere. Perhaps this transformation is where the true charm of music lies.
The bass clarinet solos at both the beginning and end should aim for a folk-like sound. In unison passages, attentive tone shaping will expand expressive possibilities. When phrases or rhythms are echoed among the parts, careful control of resonance will bring clarity to the musical direction and enhance the sense of tension. For rhythms such as 2 over 3 and standard triplets, both sustained and shortened articulations can work; feel free to embellish the phrases with vocal-style inflections where appropriate.
Above all, it is crucial to think about where the emphasis should be placed within a phrase and to shape your breath accordingly. This is particularly important in slurred passages, where phrasing often lacks intentionality. Performing with this awareness will result in a heartfelt and vibrant interpretation that communicates subtle care and musical vitality.
I am truly grateful for your continued support of the Shadow series over the years. Please look forward to the next piece in the collection.
