In 2007, I was commissioned by the Gral Wind Orchestra to write Fantôme de l'amour - sonate pour l'orchestre d'Harmonie, which was composed in sonata form. Following this, the ensemble commissioned me for three consecutive years - in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Since a sonata-form piece already existed, I decided to bring these works together into a single symphony.

The 2008 commission, ¿Estilo de España por qué?, had its introduction section removed for inclusion. The 2009 commission, Adagio Słowiańskie, was adapted to end quietly. In this final movement, themes from the first, second, and third movements reappear in a cyclical fashion, giving the work a sense of thematic unity and completion.

Although this movement includes pipe organ, the scoring allows it to be performed without one.

(Masamicz Amano)
