This piece was commissioned by S Quartetto Orgel. Inspiration came from a summer in 2024 spent in Puglia, southern Italy. Ideas for the piece formed there and were completed back in Japan, writing in an essay-like, reflective style.
I was especially struck by the vast olive groves that stretched endlessly as we drove from Polignano a Mare to Alberobello. No matter how many kilometers we traveled by car, the olive trees continued as far as the eye could see - like a vast sea of green. The intense sunlight cast deep shadows under the trees, and the dry air made it clear why Puglia is Italy's largest producer of olives. Though the blazing midsummer sun made the sweat pour, the occasional cool breeze brought a sense of relief that left a strong impression on me and influenced the character of the piece.
I aimed to create a work that would lift spirits - like the fresh aroma that rises when a splash of olive oil finishes a dish, bringing a smile to everyone's face. I hope this piece will bring joy as concert or contest repertoire.
