This composition is inspired by the "B-A-C-H" motif, derived from the name of Johann Sebastian Bach, often referred to as the father of music. The piece is crafted for a saxophone quartet, a setup exclusively comprising transposing instruments, which presented a unique challenge. To address this, the "B-A-C-H" motif was transposed into different keys (in C [BACH], in B [CHDCis], in Es [GFisAGis]), layered to create the main melody and harmonies. The composition incorporates motifs from several of Bach's most iconic works, blending the profound and beautiful music of Bach with the relatively modern timbres of the saxophone, creating a phantasmagorical interplay that seems to flicker in and out of perception. The piece features a variety of variations that highlight the saxophone's unique characteristics.
Despite its high technical demands, it is hoped that performers will find the piece rewarding. Performers are also encouraged to explore the Bach motifs used throughout the composition, further enriching their understanding and appreciation of the work.
