Commissioned, 2016, by renowned percussionist Yumi Terada, performed and recorded by Terada's percussion ensemble "DRIVE".

In Japan, cherry blossoms are called "sakura". It is a special flower dear to the people and the country. Sakura are a symbolic flower of the spring, a time of renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. The title "Miyabi" symbolizes elegance and gracefulness. My vision of sakura is reflected in this title.

The introduction consists of a B, E, F#, and A motive. In the first half of the work, use creative rubato with perhaps wide and drastic dynamic changes. The repeated phrase by ohayashi (*1) and one note repetition by hichiriki (*2) bring the piece more vitality. To be accessible for regular school band instrumentation, special percussion instruments are rarely used. If you have some leeway, I suggest adding various kinds of Japanese taiko for creative Japanese drum sounds.

(Hiroaki Kataoka)

*2 hichiriki - small double-reed wind instrument used in gagaku (made of bamboo, with 7 holes on top and 2 below)
* gagaku - court music of ancient Japan
*1 ohayashi - Japanese orchestra or accompaniment often used in traditional music.
