Commissioned for the brass ensemble of the Takikawa Wind Ensemble in Hokkaido. In March 2023, the ensemble performed my brass octet The Ruins in Limbo (published by Brain Music) at the 46th All Japan Ensemble Contest held in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. That occasion marked our first meeting, and fortunately, we had the chance to talk at the post-contest gathering. We immediately hit it off, and that encounter led to the creation of Path Beneath a Watchful Sky.
The ensemble is based in the Sorachi region, and I was told that for them, "the path" symbolizes hope that follows harsh winters, the arrival of spring, and the bonds among people. This concept became the thematic core of the piece. The title itself combines the two characters for "sky" (KANJI Sora) and "wisdom" or "to know" (KANJI chi) from "Sorachi" (KANJI), giving the piece both a poetic and regional connection.
The path is not always smooth - cherry blossoms bloom during the brief summer, and in the heart of winter, everything is buried in snow. Yet, I hope that through music, hearts can be connected, a warm breeze will blow, and brilliant light will shine. This piece portrays the journey of people walking such a path under the watchful gaze of the sky.
I would be honored if this piece becomes a cherished part of the brass ensemble repertoire.
