Commissioned by the Soka Gloria Wind Orchestra and premiered in February 2006 at their 20th regular concert, conducted by Mr. Toshiro Ozawa.

The work is a theme and variations on the Aynu folk song "Iyomante," from a ritual to send off the spirit of a bear. The piece develops through 12 expressive variations.

I was told all members of Soka Gloria are men, so I composed this piece with "masculinity" as a theme. This is the second of my own compositions to incorporate Ainu folk songs. While composing the first piece, "Chupu Kamui," I felt a resonance with the sounds of Eastern Europe. Thus, from the beginning, I proceeded with Kodály's "Peacock Variations" in mind.

I hope to continue to cherish and incorporate Japanese folk songs in my work in the future.
