This march was commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee.
The Band Clinic, organized annually and held at Hamamatsu, Japan, is Japan’s largest event of its kind, boasting a history of over fifty years since its founding. Before moving to Hamamatsu, it was held at Nemu no Sato, a Yamaha facility located in Shima Peninsula, Mie, Japan. The month of May in the scenic Shima Peninsula is truly beautiful, and Nemu Band Directors Clinic - affectionately known as “Nemu no Clinic”- was a place of aspiration for band directors not only from Japan but from all over the world.
As a member of the clinic committee, I was involved in its planning and management, taking care of guest lecturers and performing groups from various countries. Among the many projects we launched each year, one was to create and premiere new works originating from Nemu, and this march was written as part of that initiative.
Imagining the refreshing May atmosphere of Nemu no Sato, I wrote this piece as a bright and cheerful march, just as its title suggests. I remember that many bands performed it at the time. The premiere was given by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra conducted by Frederick Fennell, and I still fondly recall being praised by Alfred Reed, also participating in the clinic.
