"Hands Across the Sea" was composed by John Philip Sousa in 1899 as a celebration of friendship and goodwill among nations.
Inspired by a line from a play-"Let us swear an eternal friendship"-and the international goodwill surrounding the Spanish-American War, the march was dedicated not to a single country, but to all of America's friends abroad.
It was an immediate success at its premiere and has remained a concert band classic ever since.
