"Soaring Over the Ridges" is a commissioned work for the Toyama Minami Wind Orchestra, commemorating the ensemble's three consecutive appearances at the All Japan Band Competition finals.

While composing in mid-September 2002, I embarked on a research trip to the Alpine Route with Mr. Makino, musical director and conductor of the ensemble, and Mr. Asao, the vice president.

The majestic mountains and the rainbow shining alongside the discharge of the Kurobe Dam far exceeded my imagination in beauty. In contrast, the eerie atmosphere and unpleasant sulfur smell at Jigokudani (Hell Valley) evoked a sense of hopeless fear, leaving me speechless in the face of this dual aspect of nature. However, as we ascended from Jigokudani, the sudden appearance of the beautiful Mikurigaike Pond was a sight to behold, and this mystical scenery filled me with profound gratitude for being alive and a deep appreciation for nature.

"Soaring Over the Ridges" is an adventurous narrative depicting the impressions of Japan's Northern Alps that I personally experienced, seen from the perspective of a bird soaring through the sky. I am truly grateful for the warm cooperation and encouragement from all the ensemble members, which allowed me to pour my heart into creating this piece.

The work premiered on December 8, 2002, at the 23rd Regular Concert of the ensemble at the Overture Hall. It is a sister piece to the commissioned work, "And Then the Ocean Glows", for the Niihama Elementary School Wind Orchestra.
